Nestled just 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Pius Estate sits in the heart of the Willow Creek and the Templeton Gap, where coastal breezes and morning fog create the perfect conditions for crafting exceptional wines. Our vineyards are dry farmed when possible or deficit irrigated, ensuring the vines develop deep roots and intense character. We are committed to organic farming and certified sustainability, incorporating biodynamic principles to nurture both the land and the fruit. Every vine is hand-tended multiple times throughout the season, reflecting our dedication to artisanal winemaking.
The estate’s calcareous clay soil—with an 18-inch clay top layer over a limestone subsoil—creates a naturally high pH environment, reducing the need for acidification. The high calcium content enhances disease resistance in the berries while fostering beneficial stress that results in wines of remarkable depth and complexity. Situated in Willow Creek, our estate benefits from a climate reminiscent of Napa Valley, combined with the soils of Saint- Émilion—a rare and powerful combination for producing ultra-premium wines with richness, structure, and age-worthiness. Surrounded by rolling hills, oak trees, and cooling Pacific influences, Pius wines reflect the purity of our land and the precision of our craft..
Anthony Versochi believes that the purest form of creativity comes from a sense of childlike curiosity, free from rules and expectations. His wines have quietly left their mark on the palates of wine lovers, but his true fascination lies in the next chapter, an endless exploration of depth and discovery. Raised with a deep connection to his mother, who was highly artistic in painting, food, and fashion, Anthony developed an early appreciation for creativity in all its forms. While other kids were following a more traditional path of childhood, he was immersed in textures, flavors, smells, and colors, learning how to engage with the world through his senses. He didn’t realize until later in life that these early experiences would become the foundation for his craft, shaping the way he approaches winemaking today. Nurtured within a well-established wine house, he developed a taste for the unknown, transforming the vineyard into his creative playground. His winemaking is thoughtful and expressive, driven by a desire to create not just a product, but an experience, one that encourages people to slow down, engage their senses, and discover what lies beyond the obvious.
Pius is a family-owned winery dedicated to both tradition and evolution. Our 30-acre estate, with 20 acres under vine, is meticulously managed with intention and care. Our vineyard design pays homage to history, with Syrah planted on switchbacks, a technique first used by the Romans in Côte-Rôtie to maximize sun exposure and drainage. Though rooted in Bordeaux varietals, we blend old-world craftsmanship with contemporary precision, always striving for wines that reflect both authenticity and innovation. We are committed to working with discerning sites to express the purest reflection of terroir. This approach ensures consistency, character, and integrity, allowing each wine to tell the story of its origin. Everything is intentional. Every vine, every barrel, and every bottle is a testament to our devotion to craft, history, and progress.
